Breasts that are too large can be a real struggle. Many young women suffer from insecurities and can be embarrassed and even in pain at the pool or during physical activities because of their large breasts. To know whether and when to seek a breast reduction, consider the following information.
Because mammary glands continuously evolve throughout a woman’s life, from puberty to pregnancy to menopause, it is difficult to know when the best time is to plan a surgery.
Breasts reduction procedures can be covered by certain Swiss health insurance plans if they require a removal of over 600g per breast in a woman who is not overweight. (Body Mass Index=weight in kilograms divided by height in centimeters squared. The BMI must be between 18.5 and 25) Each breast should weigh over 1kg to ensure that about 400g will remain after the removal of 600g.
Many women have a BMI of about 29 and struggle to lose weight because the weight of their breasts makes physical activity difficult, which creates an ongoing cycle, with the failure to lose weight because of large breasts causing them to remain large.
In this case, breast reduction is the only way to end the ongoing cycle. Every procedure is adapted to the patient’s morphology and results in a more harmonious body.
For young women, I perform a simple liposuccion that can remove at least 500g without forming any scars.
In women over 25 years old, I combine a liposuccion and a mammoplasty meant to lift and reshape the breasts while minimizing any potential scarring.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia at the clinic. For a single liposuccion, the procedure lasts about an hour, and the patient can go home on the same day. Minor bruises may form and the patient will have to wear an adapted bra for two months. It is preferable to take a few days off after the operation.
For the combined breast reduction, it is advised to stay at the clinic overnight and take two to three weeks off after the operation.
The results will appear about a month after the operation and will be fully stable six months later. Although the results are permanent, the breasts will continue to change over time as if they were never operated.
Breast reduction is very effective and can completely change a woman’s life. My patients usually only have one regret: not getting it done sooner.
