When a child has a mole, it gets bigger as the child grows and may eventually reach a size that is uncomfortable during adolescence, which is the worst time for surgery. Performing the surgery before age 4 ensures that the scar tissue will not be visible. When performed during the first six months of life, the scar can even disappear completely as the dermis is still developing.
Regardless of the child’s age, the diagnosis is determined by both the dermatologist and the surgeon. It is preferable not to operate during adolescence.
The technique consists of removing the entirety of the skin lesion by getting as close to the healthy skin as possible. Depending on where the mole was located, stitching may be preferable.
The operation is conducted under local anesthesia at the clinic and is an outpatient procedure.
You can resume all activities immediately after the operation. A first follow-up appointment will take place one week after the procedure, followed by another one two months later.
