Blood platelets have the ability to induce the healing of tissues thanks to substances called growth factors. When put in contact with cells, these growth factors regenerate tissues. This process is the basis of platelet-rich plasma treatments. It can be used for the growth of transplanted hair, to engraft adipose tissue, to heal chronic wounds and to rejuvenate skin.
Platelet-rich plasma is an autologous growth factor concentrate that is made using the patient’s blood to repair their own tissues. It can be used in damaged joints or torn tendons as well as on wrinkled skin.
The treatment is conducted at the medical office. The nurse first draws the blood needed to extract the platelet-rich plasma. The plasma is then either applied on a wound, used as micro injections to rejuvenate skin, or injected into the scalp to make hair grow.
