When the skin between the eyes and the cheeks begins to sag, creases and bags of varying volumes can form right above the cheekbone, and a simple lower eyelid treatment will not be sufficient to get rid of those new bags.
Malar bag treatment is most often performed in combination with either lower eyelid surgery, a facelift, a mid-facial facelift or a global face rejuvenation. However, it can also be done as a single procedure in cases where malar bags are more severe, usually in men.
The procedure consists of simply removing the entirety of the malar bag, leaving a tiny, almost invisible scar.
A consultation is always necessary to determine the best treatment for each patient and go over the therapeutic options. On the day of the operation, the area that has to be removed is outlined with a pen directly on the skin. The procedure is done under a local anesthetic. When the malar bag is removed, a small portion of underlying tissues responsible for the swollen aspect is also removed. Very thin thread is used to close the incisions, which are then covered with thin sticking strips for a few days.
Swelling is inevitable during the days following the operation and minor bruises may be visible.
