Labiaplasty
Labia minora are very useful, especially during labor when the head of the baby comes out, and it is important not to damage them.
Overview
Procedures for labia minora reduction are described in surgery treaties dating back to the 16th century, like for instance that of Dinois, a king’s surgeon, which explains how to cut the labia minora when they “hang out of the labia majora”.
Is it for you?
There are three major reasons why women would benefit from a labiaplasty:
- If the labia minora are so long that they hang outside of the labia majora and cause discomfort when wearing tight clothes or underwear.
- If there is asymmetry between the two sides of the labia.
- If the patient experiences pain during sexual relations.
Technique
The method consists of removing excess skin to achieve labia that are at least 15mm long, symmetrical, and have a smooth, continuous edge. The outline can be longitudinal, triangular, or a combination of both in severe cases.
Procedure
The operation can be conducted either under local anesthesia at the medical office or under general anesthesia at the clinic. It lasts about 45 minutes, and you then rest for 1 to 4 hours before going home. A healing cream is applied under adapted underwear. You will not feel any pain.
After the operation
The threads used on the stitches are resorbable and will go away on their own once everything is healed, after about 15 days. The scar becomes invisible very quickly but may remain sensible for about a month. You will have to avoid wearing tight clothes, riding your bike and having sexual intercourse for three weeks.
